Distribution/Abundance:  Rare - expanding range

Primary Habitat:  Coniferous woodland

Wingspan:  14-18mm

Flight Period:  Mid April - May

Observations:  Adult moths fly in the late afternoon, evenings and readily come to light (usually for a short time immediately after dusk), flying in one generation from mid-April to the end of May. Found throughout Europe, the first British specimen was recorded in East Kent, netted in the afternoon of the 1st May 2011. The species also appears to be established in Norfolk, Suffolk and Hertfordshire. Further records from Leicestershire in 2013 and Bedfordshire in 2026 all indicate a general expansion in range. Larvae feed on the shoots and cones of various Pines, and possibly Firs.

Confusion Species:  Rhyacionia pinivorana, but flight time should differentiate.
