  Five-spot Burnet Zygaena trifolii

B&F: 0170

ABH: 54.010

Status: Extinct resident.

Distribution and Abundance: Formerly local.

Primary Habitat: Grassland.

Flight Period: June and July.

Localities: Salcey Forest, Wakerley Wood, Bedford Purlieus and Barnack Hills and Holes.

Observations: It is stated in M.O.B.G.B.I., Vol. 2, page 111, that the Five-spot Burnet appears to have become extinct in the southeast counties during the last two decades or so. This was written in the early 1980’s (Tremewan, 1980a; 1982a). Looking at the historical records that I hold, as the species was only ever local and at the limit of its range in Northamptonshire, I have taken it that all post 1960 records refer to the Narrow-bordered Five-spot Burnet Z. lonicerae as it seems that there is a strong possibility that this is the case.

Confusion Species: Narrow-bordered Five-spot Burnet

L.O.N.: July 1905 Barnwell Wold, Yardley Chase. Locally plentiful.

First Record: 1902, V.C.H.
