  Narrow-bordered Five-spot Burnet Zygaena lonicerae

B&F: 0171

ABH: 54.009

Status: Resident.

Distribution and Abundance: Common.

Primary Habitat: Grassland.

Flight Period: Single brooded in June and July.

Observations: Due to the similarity in appearance there has been confusion between this species and its congener the Five-spot Burnet (Z. trifolii) and this could reflect in the old records shown on the map. It is stated in M.O.B.G.B.I., Vol. 2, page 111, that the Five-spot Burnet appears to have become extinct in the southeast counties during the last two decades or so. As this was written in 1985 I have taken it that all modern records refer to the Narrow-bordered Five-spot Burnet. The species is generally under-recorded in the county. The lower photograph shows a rare confluent form of the species seen at Hackleton on 2 July 2011.

Confusion Species: Five-spot Burnet

L.O.N.: 1908. Weedon, Castor. Locally plentiful.

First Record: 1885, Wallis.
