  Six-belted Clearwing Bembecia ichneumoniformis

B&F: 0382

ABH: 52.014

Status: Resident.

Distribution and Abundance: Local.

Primary Habitat: Grassland.

Flight Period: Single brooded in June and July.

Localities: Harrington disused airfield, Brigstock Country Park, Barnack Hills and Holes and Dogsthorpe Brickpits.

Observations: The largest Northamptonshire colony of this species that I am aware of occurs on the bird’s-foot trefoil growing on the quarried land to the southwest of the remains of Weekley Hall Wood. The moth was first found there on 2 July 1996 when several were seen on the wing and at rest on the foodplant. Subsequent visits have confirmed the colony to be well established and extensive in this area. My understanding is that this land is scheduled for building development in the near future which clearly constitutes a threat for the continued presence of this nationally notable species on the site.

Attracted to artificial lure API - best time 9am to 6pm

L.O.N.: Unrecorded.

First Record: 1882, Hull & Tomalin.
