Coleophora lithargyrinella

B&F: 0524

ABH: 37.040

Status:  Resident

Distribution/Abundance:  Rare

Primary Habitat:  Woodland

Wingspan:  11-14mm

Flight Period:  June - July

Observations:  Case-bearing larvae feed on Greater Stitchwort, hibernating as well-grown larvae. Best recorded by looking for tell-tale feeding damage on the foodplant either in Autumn, or in April and early May, but note that this damage could also be attributed to C. sollitariella (which is also present in the county), so the case needs to be found to positively identify the moth.

Confusion Species:  Most members of the Coleophoridae family are notoriously difficult to positively identify as adults unless the recorder is particularly skilled. Best identified either from the larval case/foodplant, or by examination of adult genitalia.

L.O.N.:  N/A

First Record:  2024, Hammond.
