Agonopterix ciliella

  B&F: 0689

ABH: 32.019

Status:  Unknown

Distribution/Abundance:  Rare (prob under-recorded)

Primary Habitat:  Wasteground, Grassland, Roadside verges

Wingspan:  19-24mm

Flight Period:  August, and up to May after hibernation.

Observations: Larvae feed on a variety of umbelliferous plants. The species is widespread in adjacent counties and thus may be under-recorded due to confusion with A. heracliana. As per UK Moths website: A. ciliella can be distinguished from the commoner A. heracliana by the five brownish lines in the cilia near the base of the hindwing where heracliana only has one.

Confusion Species:  Agonopterix heracliana - hindwings need to be examined. Some members of the Depressariinae are difficult to positively identify as adults unless the recorder is particularly skilled. Best identified either from the larval case/foodplant, or by examination of adult genitalia.

L.O.N.:  N/A

First Record:  1989, Higgs
