Blackthorn Gelechia Gelechia scotinella

  B&F: 0801

ABH: 35.098

Status:  Resident

Distribution/Abundance:  Rare

Primary Habitat:  Woodland, Blackthorn scrub

Wingspan:  11-12mm

Flight Period:  July - August

Observations:  Generally a scarce species, with a scattered distribution in southern England. The larvae feed in spun leaves at the tip of shoots, and possibly the flowers of Prunus spinosa, preferring uncut plants, in April and early May. Adults are reported to be numerous near to its foodplant, seemingly not willing to venture too far - and therefore probably under-recorded. Adults are reported to attend light traps, but wild-caught adults require dissection to prove identification.

Confusion Species:  Other Gelechia species, esp if worn

L.O.N.:  N/A

First Record:  2026, Terry, P.
