Brevicornutia (Cochylis) pallidana

  B&F: 0967

ABH: 49.140

Status:  Unknown

Distribution/Abundance:  Rare

Primary Habitat:  Acid grassland

Wingspan:  10-14mm

Flight Period:  June - July

Observations:  Possibly an over-looked resident. A single moth was recorded to light at Easton Hornstocks in 2024, subsequently confirmed by dissection. The moth is considered to be quite scarce across the UK, with a very disjointed distribution. The larvae feed on Sheep's Bit, which is, apparently, a very rare plant in VC32, with the only currently known site being at Newnham Hill near Daventry (pers comm, Brian Laney, 23.x.2024). This of course opens up the possibility that the plant exists in or near to Easton Hornstocks, or that the individual moth is a vagrant. The site is regularly trapped, and so will be monitored carefuly for this species in subsequent years.

Confusion Species:  Thyraylia nana
