Green Oak Tortrix Tortrix viridana

  B&F: 1033

ABH: 49.059

Status:  Resident

Distribution/Abundance:  Common

Primary Habitat:  Woodland

Wingspan:  18-23mm

Flight Period:  May - August

Observations:  Larvae feed mainly in a leaf-fold on Oak, sometimes in almost plague proportions. Adults also sometimes attend light traps in vast numbers. It is regularly recorded in the hundreds, and I have counted over 2,000 on one particular night. Adult moths may also be seen dutring the day in flight, but often resting in quite exposed positions.

Confusion Species:  Worn examples may be confused with Cream-bordered Green Pea Earias clorana

L.O.N.:  The larvae often strip the Oak trees of their first leaves, and the moths may be seen in countless myriads fluttering round the trees in the daytime during July.

First Record:  1901, Wallis.
