Box-tree Moth Cydalima perspectalis

  B&F: 1409a

ABH: 63.054

Status:  Resident

Distribution/Abundance:  Local

Primary Habitat:

Wingspan:  37-40mm

Flight Period:  Late summer - Autumn

Observations:  First recorded in the UK in 2007, this Asian species, often referred to as Boxworm or Box Moth, has gradually taken hold in the South-east and London area, and spread from there. First VC32 record is of an adult in a garden MV trap in Kingsthorpe, Northampton. Since then, the moth has spread rapidly. Larvae feed in a loose spinning on Box (Buxus), often in large numbers and thus regarded as a serious pest, so it is well worth searching Box hedges for signs of larval infestation. The striking adults are not easily mistaken for any other species seen in the UK, but there is a dark form who's wings are almost completely satin black.
