B&F: 1637
ABH: 66.007
Status: Resident.
Distribution
and Abundance: Local.
Primary Habitat: Woodland.
Flight Period: Single
brooded in July and August.
Localities: Old
Pastures, Barford Meadows, Geddington Chase and Castor
Hanglands.
Observations: All
of the Northamptonshire moths that I have seen have been
typical L. quercus quercus and not L. quercus
callunae. Female moths are occasionally taken in
garden light traps and the day flying males can sometimes
be seen flying rapidly along the edges of woodland. In my
experience the males are more easily seen by assembling
to a fresh female and I have been surprisingly successful
with this in my Kettering town garden on a number of
occasions; typically on 11 July 1993 when five were seen
between 3p.m. and 4p.m. Greater use of this method of
recording would probably reveal the species to be more
widespread than the mapping suggests.
L.O.N.: 1907.
Many localities. Rather common, but never in large
numbers. Twice I have known them remain in the pupa state
over a year.
First Record: 1859,
Whall.
