  Orange Underwing Archiearis parthenias

B&F: 1661

ABH: 70.203

Status: Resident.

Distribution and Abundance: Local.

Primary Habitat: Woodland.

Flight Period: Single brooded in March and April.

Localities: Whistley Wood, Yardley Chase, Pitsford Water and Collyweston Great Wood.

Observations: The moth can be common flying in the sunshine as on 3 April 2002 at Sling’s Nook when at least thirteen were seen in flight and at rest on the woodland track. An unusual habitat exists at Twywell Hills and Dales where the species is established on the large birches that are growing out of the bottom of the quarry. Due to the depth of the gullet this area is cool and shaded resulting in a considerably later flight period for the moth. I have seen fresh examples on the wing here on 29 April 1996 and 13 May 2004.

L.O.N.: 1907. Rockingham, Southwick, Ashton. Not common.

First Record: 1842, Clark.
