Status: Resident.

Distribution and Abundance: Scarce.

Primary Habitat: Wetland.

Flight Period: Single brooded in June and July.

Records: 17 June 1995 Hazelborough Forest (D. Howton), 9 August 1986 Yardley Chase (B. Statham), 11 June 1988 Cottesbrooke Park (P. Horsnail) and 7 June 1997 Kettering (J. Ward).   

Observations: The Yardley Chase record above is derived from a sighting of larvae feeding on the flowers and ripening seeds of common valerian. According to, “The Flora of Northamptonshire and the Soke of Peterborough,” by Gill Gent, Rob Wilson et al, this plant is frequent and widely distributed throughout the county in wet woods and by riversides. As the moth is almost certainly under recorded searches of the food plant in August could well increase its known distribution.
