  The Magpie Abraxas grossulariata

B&F: 1884

ABH: 70.205

Status: Resident.

Distribution and Abundance: Common.

Primary Habitat: Gardens.

Flight Period: Single brooded in July and August.

Observations: Generally the species appears to have become less common over the past couple of decades or so. The Fineshade Rothamsted light trap running in woodland in the 1990’s shows an average of seven moths trapped with an overall flight period from 19 July to 31 August. Although old records show examples of extreme variation being obtained by breeding, there is only a single note, in 1946, of a variety of the moth being obtained in the wild.

L.O.N.: 1907. Everywhere. Abundant.

First Record: 1842, Clark.
