  Lunar Thorn Selenia lunularia

B&F: 1918

ABH: 70.238

Status: Resident or possible migrant.

Distribution and Abundance: Rare.

Primary Habitat: Woodland.

Flight Period: Single brooded in May and June.

Record: 31 May 1982 Ravensthorpe (R. Baylis).

Observations: The species appears to have always been rare in the county with few records over the years. The Ravensthorpe record was of a single moth taken in a garden m.v. light trap and the later mapped records from the 1960’s and 1970’s are also from gardens and as far as I can tell also of singletons. The latest locality record is pre 1950 from Bedford Purlieus. This is a Peterborough museum record that I have been unable to date more precisely, however the Purlieus were well worked in the 1950’s and 1960’s without the moth being seen.

L.O.N.: Undated, Castle Ashby.

First Record: C1900, Brown.
