  Purple Thorn Selenia tetralunaria

B&F: 1919

ABH: 70.239

Status:  Resident.

Distribution and Abundance:  Common.

Primary Habitat:  Woodland.

Flight Period:  Double brooded in March and April and again in July and August.

Observations:  All detailed site records that I hold show more moths of the summer brood having been recorded at light than those of the spring brood. Typically, the Rothamsted trap at Fineshade shows the moth being recorded in five years out of eight and that the spring brood was only seen in one year. Numerical data from the Pitsford Water light traps for the five years from 1999 to 2003 show an overall total of fifty-three moths recorded, five of which were of the spring brood.

L.O.N.:  1906. Near Oundle, Kettering, Barnwell. Uncommon.

First Record: 1882, Hull & Tomalin.
