Distribution
and Abundance: Common.
Primary Habitat: Woodland.
Flight Period: Single
brooded from January to March.
Observations: The
incidence of the melanic form f. monacharia appears
to vary considerably between localities. In the
1990s at Fineshade this form constituted some 3% of
the population, whereas in Geddington Chase the figure
was around 20%. The moth was very common in the
1970s in Grafton Park Wood at actinic light traps
left overnight in an oak wood with many moths at rest on
the tree trunks in the morning. In the early season of
2005 a moth was taken in the Pitsford Reservoir light
traps on 25 November 2004 followed by others in December.
