  Common Heath Ematurga atomaria

B&F: 1952

ABH: 70.275

Status:  Resident.

Distribution and Abundance: Rather local.

Primary Habitat:  Grassland.

Flight Period: Single brooded in May and June.

Localities: Fox Covert Nr Weston, Harry’s Park Wood, Ring Haw and Werrington Junction.

Observations: This species appears to be at its most common on the limestone grassland in the north of the county favouring sites such as Collyweston Quarry and Barnack Hills and Holes. The lack of heather clad heathland that provides optimum habitat for this species is certainly a factor effecting the Northamptonshire distribution of the moth. Furthermore it is also under-recorded due to its day flying habit and therefore it is not included in m.v. light trap returns. Despite this it is almost certainly far more widespread than the records indicate. The moth seems to be single brooded most years.

L.O.N.:  1907. Several localities. Common locally.

First Record:  1863, Smith.
