  Barred Red Hylaea fasciaria

B&F: 1962

ABH: 70.284

Status: Resident.

Distribution and Abundance: Fairly common.

Primary Habitat: Woodland.

Flight Period: Single brooded in June and July.

Observations: The moth is absent from Kettering lists up to the 1950’s. It is apparent that it gradually became more widespread from the mid 1940’s following the felling of some of Northamptonshire’s large established ancient woodlands for their replacement with conifer plantations. Some examples of these being Brampton, Sywell and Hardwick Woods. Currently the species seems to be well established in all worked coniferous woodland and as it occasionally turns up in garden light traps has probably also spread to garden conifers.

L.O.N.: Castle Ashby, Weedon.

First Record: 1863, Harlestone Firs, Smith.
