  Eyed Hawk-moth Smerinthus ocellata

B&F: 1980

ABH: 69.002

Status: Resident.

Distribution and Abundance: Common.

Primary Habitat: Wetland.

Flight Period: Single brooded in May and June with an occasional partial second brood.

Observations: Historically second brood moths were very much the exception in Northamptonshire; however recently the species now seems to be producing a partial second generation more frequently. An instance of this occurred at Pitsford Water in 2006 when moths were seen in all months from May to September. At this site annual moth trap catches vary considerably in abundance as illustrated by the following details for the decade to 2009. Viz: - 2000 - 14, 2001 - 15, 2002 - 30, 2003 - 35, 2004 - 54, 2005 - 71, 2006 - 65, 2007 - 32, 2008 - 15 and 2009 - 21. In the past I have occasionally found the over-wintering pupae at the foot of willows in damp places.

L.O.N.: 1907. Many localities. Rather common. Taken freely at light in Northampton.

First Record: 1858, Green.
