The moth was found in a goods yard resting on packing
cases that had contained engine parts imported from the
United States. It was found dead having recently
succumbed to the heavy frosts that were prevalent locally
at that time. Initially it was thought to have been
an example of the Striped Hawk-moth H. livornica which
is of similar appearance. The true identity of the moth
was only established in 2013.
