  Poplar Kitten Furcula bifida

B&F: 1998

ABH: 71.007

Status: Resident.

Distribution and Abundance: Rather local.

Primary Habitat: Woodland.

Flight Period: Single brooded from May to July.

Localities: Hazelborough Forest, Salcey Forest, Cottesbrooke Park and Geddington Chase.

Observations: The occurrence of the species in a particular habitat may be determined by the presence of empty cocoons on poplar tree trunks. These are easily seen unlike tenanted cocoons that are a considerable test of eyesight to find. In 1975 after much effort two full cocoons were found on poplars along the river Ise at Newton, one at Grafton Park Wood and one at Old Head Wood. These successfully emerged in due course. Generally speaking I have found the moth to be uncommon at light and only seen in small numbers.

L.O.N.: 1905. Several localities. Not uncommon but irregular.

First Record: 1882, Hull & Tomalin.
