  Gypsy Moth Lymantria dispar

B&F: 2034

ABH: 72.011

Status: Resident

Distribution and Abundance: Rare

Primary Habitat: General distribution

Flight Period: Single brooded in July and August

Observations: Former resident (possibly a sub-species established in the Fens of Hunts, Cams & Norfolk) which became extinct in the UK. Male moths recently appeared in low numbers as presumed migrants from The Continent but appears to have since become resident in southern parts of the UK. Six larvae of this species were found on Birch in Thrapston in 2020, reared to adulthood, but retained and not released. Further males were recorded later in 2020 during a period of "good migrant weather" in Higham Ferrers and Brackley - the catch at Higham Ferrers including an Oak Processionary, again suggesting possible dispersal/migration. The larger, paler female is a very poor flier and often not encountered.
