  White Ermine Spilosoma lubricipeda

B&F: 2060

ABH: 72.020

Status:  Resident.

Distribution and Abundance:  Common.

Primary Habitat:  General occurrence.

Flight Period:  Single brooded from May to July.

Observations: In most localities more common at light than its congener the Buff Ermine, (S. luteum) and particularly common at the Pitsford Water static light traps where it has increased in abundance over the five years from 1999 to 2003 as follows:- 1999 - 129, 2000 - 217, 2001 - 308, 2002 - 447 and 2003 - 733. In 2003 moths were seen from 24 April to 25 June. As a contrast the Fineshade woodland Rothamsted trap only attracted 96 examples of the moth over seven years in the 1990’s. The occasional small second brood is rare in this county, I have only been able to trace three instances. These were on 2 September 1934 at Kettering and 23 October 1952 and 24 August 1953 at Wellingborough.

L.O.N.:  1907. Everywhere. Very common.

First Record: 1842, Clark.
