  Dotted Clay Xestia baja

B&F: 2130

ABH: 73.353

Status: Resident.

Distribution and Abundance: Rare.

Primary Habitat: Woodland.

Flight Period: Single brooded in July and August.

Records: 5 July 1986 Yardley Chase (B. Statham), 29 July 1989 and 25 July 1992 Geddington Chase (J. Ward) and 28 July 1995 Kettering (J. Ward).

Observations: The species has become much less common in the county in more recent years. In the 1970’s it was common at actinic light traps left overnight in Grafton Park Wood. In a fifty-year review of Castor Hanglands in the early 1960’s it was stated as having been very common there over the review period, but it does not appear to have been seen there since. There are reports, subsequent to those of 1907 mentioned below, where it was common at sugar, so this may be worth trying in some of the old localities. These include Salcey Forest, Old Poor’s Gorse and Bedford Purlieus. For the decade to 2009 I have received no notification of records for the species.

L.O.N.: 1907. Kettering, Geddington Chase, Weedon. At sugar. Not common.

First Record: 1843, Whitwell.
