  The Gothic Naenia typica

B&F: 2136

ABH: 73.368

Status: Resident.

Distribution and Abundance: Local - DECLINING

Primary Habitat: Waste ground.

Flight Period: Single brooded in June and July.

Observations: A once common visitor to moth traps, the species appears to be declining over the last few years. There were 12 records in 2016, 4 records in 2017, a single record in 2018 and none in 2019 or 2020. Several caterpillars were found feeding at night on blackthorn in the spring of 1984 at Pottedbrig Spinney. This is a damp area, seemingly of the type favoured by the species. The moth is decidedly uncommon at Pitsford Water with few records, mainly to actinic light in the early years of recording. It was seen in the static m.v. traps for the first time in 2004 but only as a singleton. A further six examples were recorded in the next five years to 2009.

L.O.N.: 1907. Many localities. Common.

First Record: 1843, Whitwell.
