  Striped Wainscot Mythimna pudorina

B&F: 2196

ABH: 73.289

Status: Unknown.

Distribution and Abundance: Rare

Primary Habitat: Wetland.

Flight Period: Recorded in August.

Record: 21 June 2017, Oundle (P. Horsnail); 2 August 1986 Castor Hanglands (J. Ward).

Observations: The Castor Hanglands record above was a singleton, part of a large catch taken on a very good night. The moth was unworn and Derek Howton confirmed the identity. Writing in the 1960’s in his unpublished paper, “The Lepidoptera of Castor Hanglands and Ailsworth Heath 1911 – 1960,” R. E. M. Pilcher described the species as rare on the reserve. There is an additional pre 1950 Peterborough Museum record from Bedford Purlieus ascribed (M. R.). I have been unable to trace the source of the SP96 record shown in “The Moths and Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland,” by Heath, J., Emmet, A. M. and others, (1976-) Vol. 9, p. 262 but several years ago was told by a third party that the moth was taken in Northamptonshire.

L.O.N.: Victoria History.

First Record: 1902, Victory County History.
