  Alder Moth Acronicta alni

B&F: 2281

ABH: 76.036

Status: Resident.

Distribution and Abundance: Local.

Primary Habitat: Woodland.

Flight Period: Single brooded in May and June.

Localities: Hazelborough Forest, Nene Campus, Brampton Wood and Mucklands Wood.

Observations: Generally an uncommon species in the county and in my experience almost always seen as a singleton at light. A notable exception to this was on 25 May 1992 when four were taken, two at Barford Meadows and two in a Kettering garden light trap. Most of the Northamptonshire moths that I have seen are rather darker than the type, approaching ab. steinerti. Over the years I have come across the caterpillar of this species on two occasions. Each time it has been found feeding low down on hazel and each time has been parasitized.

L.O.N.: 1888. Kettering, Castle Ashby. Uncommon.

First Record: 1882, Hull & Tomalin.
