  Svensson's Copper Underwing Amphipyra berbera

B&F: 2298

ABH: 73.063

Status: Resident.

Distribution and Abundance: Fairly common.

Primary Habitat: Woodland.

Flight Period: Single brooded in August and September.

Observations: Overall this species is almost certainly incompletely recorded due to confusion with its congener the Copper Underwing (A. pyramidea). It is however clear in sites that have been closely monitored that Svensson’s Copper Underwing is the less common of the two moths.

There have been many tips documented for use to differentiate the two Copper Underwing species, but the only reliable method is to check the underside of the hindwings:
Greater suffusion of copper colouration seen on the underside of the hindwings of Copper Underwing.
The zig-zag patern on the forewing and colour of palps have both recently been discredited as being unreliable.

Confusion Species: Copper Underwing. Identification: Hindwing check/dissection to confirm - or Aggregate if in doubt

First Record: 1975, Grafton Park Wood, Ward.
