Status: Resident.

Distribution and Abundance: Very common.

Primary Habitat: General occurrence.

Flight Period: Single brooded from June to August, with an occasional 2nd brood in October.

Observations: In some localities the species can be very common at m.v. light. The Fineshade Rothamsted light trap running in woodland for seven years in the 1990’s provides useful information on the flight period and abundance of this species and its similar congener The Rustic (H. blanda). Viz:-
The Uncertain: Average annual number of moths recorded - 30. Overall flight period 18 June to 16 August.
The Rustic:  Average annual number of moths recorded - 6.  Overall flight period 4 July to 7 August.
