  Egyptian Bollworm Earias insulana

B&F: 2420

ABH: 74.012

Status: Migrant.

Distribution and Abundance: Rare.

Record: 27 October 2009 Woodnewton (N. Smith).

Observations: The first Northamptonshire record for this species was taken at light in a large rural garden in Woodnewton in northeast Northamptonshire. This is probably only the sixth British record. The moth was found resting on the side of a 40w actinic light trap at 7.40pm, some three hours after sunset. This is a well-trapped garden and other similar light traps were also operating within the garden at the same time. Additionally, there was the strong attraction to moths of a 50ft stretch of ivy in full bloom, along which the successful trap was sited. Other more usual migrants that were recorded along with the species were Rush Veneer, Dark Sword-grass and Silver Y. Numerous experienced recorders, who we thank for their interest, confirmed the identification. The image is of the actual moth.

First Record: 2009, Smith.
